CREATIVE WHIZZ KID:
CATE GOWERS

If you couldn't express yourself creatively, how would this impact the way you dress?

Expressing myself creatively has many facets and one of them is fashion, but it so inherent in me I couldn’t imagine the kind of person I’d be without creative expression. I don’t think about fashion too seriously though and have a lot of fun wearing my clothes. The more time that I spend at my part time jobs wearing plain, practical clothes, the more eccentrically I will dress on my days off; full pink outfits, floral on floral print, crazy tights, weird layering, bigger jewelry. In the same way if I haven’t created art in a while, when I come to making something I have all of this inspiration and energy built up ready to flow out of me. I feel like I have this creative force and when it is restricted, it doesn’t fizzle out but instead it builds up until it's set free. It doesn’t grow though unless it is constantly given attention and love, like a child.

What inspires your style more profoundly, internal/external influences?
My general style comes from external influences but what I wear day to day depends on what I am feeling internally. My grandmother was a fashion designer and works in high fashion and my mum is a graphic designer so they began my love of beautiful and interesting things from birth. I feel inspired by a myriad of things in my surrounding world from the very mundane to the extraordinarily complex and this filters into the art I make and the way I dress. I like the idea of a fusion of multiple styles and don’t feel limited to identify myself with one type of dressing. Maybe this comes from my deep love of travel and absorbing different cultures. After I have explored a new country I have so many images in my head and have absorbed so much it brings new energy to the way I dress and embellish.

How would negative comments towards your self-formed style affect you now compared to 10 years ago?
I am a lot stronger now than I was when I was 12. At that age you've experienced so little and are really growing into a very new form of yourself. It is harder than when you’re 22 to know what your body is about and how you can express yourself through clothing. But even from a young age I was always quite sure of what I liked and not easily swayed by what those around me did or wore. I may not have been doing or wearing what everyone else was but I could never mold to something that didn’t feel like me, I’ve always had that strong intuition. Over those 10 years I've finished school, travelled through 7 countries, had multiple jobs, graduated, fallen in love, had exhibitions and made a lot of artwork which have all influenced me and in turn the way i dress. I am more aware of what it is to be a woman, have had more time to experiment and collect clothes that feel good on me and have been looking at the world and people for a lot longer. I understand a fraction more of the world and a hell of a lot more about myself.

Do you believe in 'dressing to your body type'?
I believe in dressing in what makes you feel rad more than dressing to your body type. The idea that we have to dress to our body types has negative connotations as it encourages people, women especially, to assess what are their 'worst features' and hide them. There are definitely silhouettes that suit different bodies but I think it should come from your own intuition of what makes you feel the best about yourself rather than wanting to cover up and be ashamed of a part of your body. I like to think of getting dressed like making an artwork, it’s kind of like a spontaneous painting where you place things next to or on top of each other and see how they will sing. This obsession that our society has with body assessments and being concerned constantly with attractiveness just holds us back and gives us false ideals about where our value lies. My value is not in the clothes that I wear, clothes are for the most part an individual experience. It lies in what I create with my hands, how I use my mind, how I connect with other humans and the energy I put out into the world.

Would your style alter if you suddenly came into great fortune?
I don’t think my style would change much and I wouldn’t start buying all the big brands just because I could but holy shit I would buy a lot more clothes, and SHOES. I think people can get a bit swept up into the cult of a hot brand and forget what makes the actual piece desirable to them as an individual. I pay more attention to texture, silhouette, colour, symbolism, comfort, print, cut and pattern than to the actual brand. I never leave the house without my fingers full of bling and some big earrings, particularly in favour of sassy hoops. Oh and I do love a good trawl through the op-shop, I don’t think that would change if my bank account was fuller, plus its not as harsh on the environment!

Is your style a product of organic development or conscious construction?
As I have grown and found what I am interested in in life and my art, I’ve also found myself naturally getting rid of old pieces that were no longer me, and starting to shop for different things.  I didn’t decide I wanted to dress a certain way, it just happened. The only conscious decision I make about my clothes, is to not let myself dress boring just because I’m not feeling great, because not dressing interestingly makes me feel even worse about myself and my day. I also make a conscious effort to wear quite a lot of jewellery, because it makes me feel good.

Have you observed any changes to your style as you age?
I’ve definitely started wearing a lot more black, more mesh, more of a grungy look. It makes me feel in control, and that’s important to me.

If you could dress in shades of only one colour for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
Black!! (please don’t tell me how it is a shade not a colour) It makes me feel strong and powerful, which makes me feel safe and confident in what I’m doing. It’s like the equivalent of walking with my own bad ass soundtrack

Do you dress for yourself, others or the occasion?
Definitely for myself. It’s such an important part of how I express myself and show the people around me who I am, so if I let someone else dictate what I wore I wouldn’t be being honest. I also don’t mind being over dressed when I go out, it’s never bad to feel extra special. I used to worry about being over dressed even if I wanted to be, until I read that if you are overdressed people will think you’ve either just been, or are just going to somewhere cool.

Would you feel comfortable allowing someone to choose every outfit you wore for two consecutive weeks?
No I would hate that. Even if they knew me well and knew my style, it’s such a personal thing, relating to how I’m feeling and what I’m interested in. I don’t want how I show the world who I am to be chosen by someone else

If you couldn't express yourself creatively, how would this impact the way you dress?
How I dress is the same as my jewelry, chaotic color ever everywhere. Clashing Iridescent fabric, fluffy, and outrageous colours. I feel like this is expressing myself creatively and if this was restricted I would obviously have to dress more conservatively.

How would negative comments towards your self-formed style affect you now compared to 10 years ago?
Probably a lot less! I'm a much more empowered independent woman! Girl power yewww! I guess I like myself much more than I used to, I'm more confidence than  the young teen I used to be, and I like the way I dress. If others don't it's there problem.

How does your style change during the highs and lows of creativity?
I guess when I'm feeling blah about things and uninspired I'll be more safe in the way I dress, maybe just a pair of flares and a t. If not I'll go for something more fun and glamorous but crazy.

Is your style a product of organic development or conscious construction?
For sure organically! I try not to rain any ideas in. This even applies to making jewelry, I rarely draw or plan a ring before I start. I just start putting things together. If it works it works, if not I change direction.

What wardrobe staples make you feel most secure? To what extent would it affect you to live without them?
My dressing gown and my blunstones!!! While I love to dress up in my costumes, when I'm at home and working in my studio comfort is key! I live in my dressing gown in winter and in summer I'm pretty happy naked. My blunstones are the best thing ever because they don't have shoe laces and I can just slip them on.

How would your outfits change if you were to choose them at opposite ends of the day? Night vs morning / tired vs fresh etc.
Most of the clothes that I wear are comfy and slightly oversized, so honestly most of my outfits could almost be worn as pajamas! My clothing choices would stay fairly consistent depending on what I’m feeling, but if I’m feeling fresh and energised I would opt for more funky makeup and hair with dangly earrings, whereas when I’m tired I don’t want anything on my face or any heavy jewellery weighing me down (although my rings stay on my fingers constantly).

Have you observed any changes to your style as you age?

The thing that has changed, as I’ve gotten older, is that I would choose a comfortable outfit over a sexy one. I’d much rather wear a cute, flowing onesie, rather than a tight dress… but if an outfit just happens to be sexy as well as comfy then kudos to me! I also have stopped caring about wearing bras! Who cares if my boobs are a bit saggy, they’re so comfortable!

My taste in jewellery has also developed; as I would much rather spend a lot of money on one well-made piece of jewellery, rather than buy lots of cheap pieces for the same amount. Quality over quantity!

Do you think young adults would benefit from stronger role models or better resources to understand, develop, and create their own style/identity?

As a teenager I had many role models, whether celebrities, family members, or older friends at school who I looked up to. As I have gotten older, I’ve come to realise that having role models can sometimes be harmful. If we idolise other people too much, we are only going to be thoroughly disappointed if they let us down (which they probably will since they are human too). I believe a much healthier option is to see every person (including oneself) as beautifully flawed, and to honour their accomplishments but also be understanding of their faults, instead of trying to ignore their imperfections as we so often are taught to do. We are all human and we are all stumbling our way through life.

On the topic of style/identity, I think it is much more beneficial to choose for yourself who or what inspires you, whether art, music, historical figures, other cultures, or your imagination! Don’t let anyone else speak for who you want to be or how you want to dress.

What wardrobe staples make you feel most secure? To what extent would it affect you to live without them?

I love my Dr. Martens (cliché I know)! When I feel like my outfit is a bit average but I put on my boots it makes everything else look stylish and funky! I would be pretty sad to have to go without my boots as I have trouble finding shoes that I like the look of and are also comfortable. Shoe shopping is a nightmare and I get so stressed out, so once I have a pair that I love it is a big accomplishment and I wear them until they wear out (or a better pair comes along)!

I also love my rings. I’ve been collecting silver rings for a long time, and if I were to ever have to give them up I would be so sad as I feel more like myself when my fingers are bedazzled with sparkly jewellery. As an artist, I use my hands a lot, so feeling like I have beautiful hands makes working fun!

Have you ever overthought an important outfit to the point of backing out? What insecurities come into play and where do you think they stem from?

When I feel like there is pressure on me to look good, whether it’s a fancy event or visiting family, I spend ages figuring out what to wear. I care way too much about what people think of me… ‘Do I look artsy enough?’… ‘Am I too formal/not formal enough?’… ‘What if <insert conservative relative’s name> sees my new tattoo?’… I’m definitely trying to grown out of this habit, and I’m learning to dress for ME and not for anyone else. It’s certainly a hard learning process, as I’ve had many years of experiences of feeling what I wear is inadequate, but being at art school and surrounded by and supported by other creative people has definitely helped me feel more confident about what I wear (and who I am).
